The Request to Samuel for a King
The Request to Samuel for a King
1 Samuel 8:12
1 Samuel 8:12 (ESV) “And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.”
Samuel was asked by Israel to appoint a king so they could be like the nations around them. Israel wanted to abandon the Lord’s kingship, with the demonstrated blessings thereof, and have a king they could see. Samuel warned Israel of the dangers of that request in that the king would oppress his own people. The tool that the king would use was the organizational structure.
